Rafiki Mwema was established in 2011, born from the need to support young girls and boys in Kenya who have suffered trauma. Committed to understanding and repairing the intense pain these children have experienced, Rafiki Mwema, (meaning loyal friend) have built four houses on their farm in Nakuru, Kenya and look after over 200 children physically and emotionally.
“...We help our girls to understand their frightening experience and allow them to know that they are not to blame. While they are with us, our girls receive medical attention; support through their court cases; education; therapy and a warm, loving, playful and empathic environment – we change the air they breathe so they can repair from the inside. At Rafiki Mwema we work with our boys to respect themselves and others. We give them the values to become safe husbands and fathers. We help them to be able to be loved.”
It was profound serendipity that led Kere and Adrian (Team Loobylou) to meet Sarah (Rafiki CEO/Founder) at a fundraiser where Kere was donating an artwork, and only very last minute actually attending. Having been so moved, Kere’s tears were hailed as one of the ugliest cries of all time, and the pair committed to finding a way to help. All profits from this candle, named for the hope this organisation brings, go directly to Rafiki Mwema to support the incredible work they do.
